The architecture of Wafi is dominated by the distinctive pyramid shape that will soon be home to the lavish Raffles Hotel. However, they have also managed to squeeze in a staggering 80,000 square metres for family entertainment at the Encounter Zone.

The four floors are simply packed with shops, but there’s plenty more to distract, particularly if you have a penchant for fine dining.

Stretched along the narrow streets of Deira, the souk offers almost every kind of gold jewellery, trinket and ornament imaginable, and never below 18 carat quality. But don’t despair if gold is not your flavour, because pearls, diamonds, emeralds and most other precious stones can also be found in abundance.

If you’re planning to make a day of the Gold Souk (you will need at least a day to see it in its entirety), always make sure you have your bartering shoes on. While it may be a little intimidating, satisfaction is just cut-price gold necklace away.
