The Lamb and Flag 33 Rose Street
A good traditional pub can be hard to find in central London, but the Lamb and Flag, built in 1623, is one rare example. Billed as one of the oldest pubs in the city, the Lamb and Flag was once known as the Bucket of Blood on account of the bare-knuckle fights held in the front courtyard.
The pub’s popularity relies on the way it has successfully preserved its old-world charm – tucked up a quiet side-street in Covent Garden and accessed by an ancient narrow passageway lit with a black lantern, a visit to the Lamb and Flag feels like stepping back in time. The low ceilings, wooden interiors and no-frills décor all contribute to the quaint and cosy atmosphere.
The pub serves an excellent selection of real ales and is famed for its extensive range of whiskies. It is extremely popular, so be sure to get there early if you want a seat; alternatively, you can join the noisy throng of after-work drinkers out in the front courtyard.

Milk and Honey 61 Poland Street
This speakeasy-style private members bar offers an alluring alternative to the usual Soho pub scene.
Hidden behind an anonymous black-fronted façade with no signage or door number, Milk and Honey’s intial draw is its aura of exclusivity. But once you’re in, the friendly and intimate setting belies the forbidding exterior. The theme is twenties prohibition, and the bar is bedecked with twenties curiosities and paraphernalia, with swing and jazz providing the background music.
Copies of the bar’s rules can be found on the tables, and are expected to be taken seriously (‘Do not bring anyone unless you would leave that person alone in your home’) – the idea is to create a refined and polite environment that harks back to a more civilised age.
Milk and Honey is a private members bar, but non-members are allowed access by reservation until 11pm. 61 Poland Street Soho London W1F 7NU
