Balthazar 80 Spring Street
The feverish buzz that greeted its opening in 1997 may have subsided, but this handsome SoHo bistro remains one of the most fashionable restaurants in town.
Formerly a leather wholesaler’s warehouse, Balthazar can accommodate over 200 people in its spacious dining room and bar. The surroundings evoke the ambience of an aged French brasserie; the large airy room is bedecked with oversized mirrors and brass fixtures, while the faded mustard walls, red banquettes and beautifully tiled floor lend it an authentic old-world charm.
Balthazar serves classic bistro standards, and the menu changes throughout the day from breakfast through to late-night supper. Booking is essential as it’s always teeming with people, but if you haven’t planned ahead you can drop into Balthazar’s Bakery next door for delicious French pastries or a light lunch.

Peter Luger Steak House 178 Broadway
With its bright lighting, gruff waiters and worn wooden furniture, the Peter Luger Steak House doesn’t score highly on ambience, style or welcoming demeanour. But try its legendary porterhouse steak and it soon becomes clear why this Williamsburg institution remains an unmissable New York culinary experience.
A local landmark since 1887, the restaurant was purchased by the Forman family in the 1940s and has been a family-run concern ever since. The Formans oversee the selection process personally, visiting wholesale markets every day to hand-select the best cuts of meat.
The result is the most exquisite steak available in the city – soft tender pink on the inside, charred on the outside and brought sizzling to your table with side orders of fried potatoes and creamed spinach. The dining room is always tightly packed and bustling; eating at Peter Luger’s is a communal experience, with platters available to share between 2, 3 and 4 persons.
Book well in advance, but leave your credit card at the hotel – Peter Luger’s only accepts payment in cash or with its own credit card.

Gotham Bar & Grill 12 East 12th Street
The Gotham Bar & Grill has been serving fine American cuisine to a smart and sophisticated clientele since 1984. It’s famed for its impeccable service and expansive dining room, with high ceilings, marble railings, and floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a bustling city view at one end and a peaceful garden at the other.
The spectacular food comes from the kitchen of world-class chef Alfred Portale, who pioneered the ‘architectural’ style of presentation - towers of ingredients stacked up vertically, with each delicate flavour and aroma building up into an unforgettable culinary experience.
The restaurant prides itself on consistency but never gets complacent. The menu is revamped every season and the wine list constantly evolves, ensuring that the Gotham Bar & Grill remains fresh and exciting. 12 East 12th Street New York NY 10003

Carnegie Deli 854 Seventh Avenue
This legendary Jewish deli on the Upper West Side has been packing in tourists and locals alike since it first opened in 1937.
Featured in the Woody Allen movie ‘Broadway Danny Rose’, a visit to the Carnegie Deli is the quintessential New York experience. The aroma of cured deli meat and sour pickles fills the air, colourful salami and smoked fish salads stack up on the counter, headshots of celebrity patrons line the walls, and diners crowd together in an atmosphere of dizzying bustle and chaos.
The deli is famous for its colossal sandwiches of corned beef, pastrami, brisket, turkey, chopped liver, and triple-decker combinations of ingredients. You are not expected to tackle the mountain of meat in one sitting, however, and most diners take away enough food to see them through two more meals.

Chef Cesare Casella has assembled a rich and inventive menu of Tuscan specialities, using locally sourced ingredients. The result is an enticing range of adventurous dishes, from the farro grain cooked risotto style to the crispy black cod with truffle broth.
The restaurant itself is modelled on a Tuscan farmhouse, with a terracotta tiled roof, antique barn-wood flooring, and with a huge wood-burning oven as the centrepiece. The ambience is rustic and homely, with friendly and attentive service from the staff.
If you’re in a hurry, try dining at the long wooden bar, where you can order some appetisers and sample Beppe’s wide range of Tuscan wines.

Dylan Prime 62 Laight Street
Dylan Prime breaks the mould with a hip, sophisticated, downtown atmosphere that defies tradition and a staff that are keen to delight.
Dramatic mahogany and glass panelled wine cellars accent the plush booths and romantic lighting sets the tone for a steakhouse experience you are unlikely to have encountered before.
All the regular steakhouse items are here – and they're good – but you could easily (and happily) dine at Dylan Prime many times without taking a single bite of beef. The non-steak items include seared halibut and jumbo lump crab with mushrooms and truffle oil. There's even a Portobello mushroom steak for the vegetarian crowd, and the signature appetizer is cheese fondue. The music is more Moby than Sinatra, and is picked by the staff on duty at the time. The fashionable bar and lounge is a scene unto itself; it serves lighter food and killer cocktail inventions like the TriBeCa Town Car, a sidecar made with apricot brandy. If you're a Martini fan, don't miss Dylan Prime's version with blue cheese-stuffed olives.
